Does Walgreens do a 2 step TB test? ›

The test may be done at any local health department, primary care clinic, doctors office, CVS, Walgreens etc.

Once you have your second visit with your healthcare provider, they'll be able to tell you if your skin's reaction indicates that you may or may not have a TB infection. In most cases, you should get the results of your TB blood test within one to two days, though it could take longer.

Your health care provider MUST check your arm 2 or 3 days after the TB skin test, even if your arm looks OK to you. If you have a reaction to the test, it will look like a raised bump. Your health care provider will measure the size of the reaction. If there is a bump, it will go away in a few weeks.

The two-step test is NOT the usual PPD skin test in which you receive an injection of PPD and the test area is observed one time at specific time frame. The two-step PPD test is used to detect individuals with past TB infection who now have diminished skin test reactivity.

Best practice indicates that a two-step tuberculin skin test (TST) involves two tests performed within one to four weeks of each other. The second test can be completed up to one year from the first test, provided there has not been an exposure to infectious tuberculosis (TB) disease during that time period.

After the test, you should avoid using bandages, putting on lotion, or scratching the test area because it may affect the results. You can wash the area with water, but do not wipe or scrub. If the area itches, put an ice cube or cold cloth on it.

A rapid sputum test can tell if a person has TB within 24 hours.

A “positive” TB blood test result means you probably have TB germs in your body. Most people with a positive TB blood test have latent TB infection. To be sure, your doctor will examine you and do a chest x-ray. You may need other tests to see if you have latent TB infection or active TB disease.

If you have an Mtb infection, the skin around the injection site should start to swell and harden within 48 to 72 hours . This bump, or induration, may also change color. But the induration's size, not the color, will determine your results. An induration of less than 5 millimeters (mm) is a negative result.

Side effects are uncommon from the Mantoux skin test. However, a person who has been exposed to TB germs may occasionally have a sizable reaction, which may cause some mild itching, swelling or irritation. These kinds of reactions should disappear in one to two weeks.

The needle angle is advanced through the epidermis if it's an intradermal injection. This is done approximately 3 mm in the skin's superficial layer. This is done to ensure that the entire slope lies under the skin and is covered. If the needle is too shallow or goes in too deep, the test results will be inadequate.

The testing solution/serum (Tubersol) is placed just under the top layer of your skin. A small bump (similar to a mosquito bite) appears when the serum is injected. This bump may disappear almost immediately or it may linger for a while. There may be some slight oozing of blood from the site, but avoid using a bandaid.

The patients' readings of their own results are inaccurate and should never be relied on to make clinical decisions.

The test is “negative” if there is no bump (or only a very small bump) at the spot where the fluid was injected. A negative TB skin test usually means that you don't have TB.

The TST is an intradermal injection. When placed correctly, the injection should produce a pale elevation of the skin (a wheal) 6 to 10 mm in diameter (see Appendix A for detailed procedures). The skin test reaction should be read between 48 and 72 hours after administration.
